Puppy Eye Tests

Today all five pups went out in the car to see Jeff Yellowley and have their eyes tested. No they don't have to read a chart pinned to the wall, or count how many bonios am I holding up! Jeff is one of about 20 specialist vets in UK who can examine dogs' eyes and check for eye diseases. Our breed is associated with Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Hereditary Cataracts (HC), both of which are often late onset, but from the Finnish Club's magazine I have noted that the incidence of PHTVL/PHPV is around 1.58% and in many breeds this is congenital (present at birth), so when possible I have litter screened my pups, like I do the border collies. This test simply checks whether they have any congenital defects, it does not guarantee that they wont develop a condition which is progressive/late onset. All five pups were given a clear certificate. The BVA web site gives more information about eye testing.
